The ultimate guide on how to use my art yarns.

If your unsure which yarn is right for your project then follow this yarn guide to learn more about the different styles I enjoy spinning.

The chunky Single

The chunky single is a one ply yarn. Easy to knit with, squishy and light.

Suggested needle size

8mm-15mm
I like to knit with these yarns on larger needles (15mm)
This gives the fabric drape and keeps the knit more lightweight. If you want a tighter warmer fabric opt for a smaller needle size.

What can I make with these?

Pretty much anything you can think of! Here are some ideas to get you going.

– My Colour Yourself Free Cardi’ pattern
– Wefts for weaving (the horizontal strands)
– Pom-poms and tassels
– Crochet (super chunky perfect for bulkier projects e.g blankets/cushion covers, see my crochet mitt pattern )
– As a Chunky/super chunky substitute in a knitting\crochet pattern.
(Remember to do a swatch as the gauge and fabric density will likely be different than a commercially spun yarn).

Pros

These yarns are very squishy and generally less dense than a plied yarn. They are a personal favourite of mine for knitting larger garment for this reason.

The Super Chunky/jumbo 2-ply

The super bulky single is a 2-ply yarn. Strong, durable and easy to knit with, creates a warm dense fabric.

Suggested needle size

12-15mm

I prefer to use 15mm needles when working these yarns.
This creates a dense fabric with a nice amount of flexibility. If you
want a stiff denser fabric opt for a smaller needle size. Similarly if you want a looser fabric knit with larger (20mm) needles.

What can I make with these?

Pretty much anything you can think of! Here are some ideas to get you going:

– My Trapper hat knitting pattern (coming soon)
– Wefts and warps for weaving.
– Pom-poms and tassels.
– Crochet (perfect for bulkier projects e.g blankets/cushion covers)
– As a jumbo substitute in a knitting\crochet pattern.
(Remember to do a swatch as the gauge and fabric density will likely be different than a commercially spun yarn).

Pros

This yarn is super durable as it is made by spinning two singles together. It creates a very warm fabric as a result, ideal for smaller garments such as hats and mitts.

The Jumbo Supercoil

The Jumbo Supercoil, queen of the art yarns. Perfect for (but not limited to) weaving, the resulting fabric is very warm and dense. Using just a row or two provides an interesting texture pop, especially along side finer yarns.

What can I make with these?

These are just a few ideas, let your imagination run wild

– Tassels (remember to tie knots in your ends as the coils may become loose)
– Make a quick blanket by crocheting with your hands
– All sorts of creative weaving
– Wear skeined up as a scarf
– Crochet into a chain with your fingers and use to hang bunting from.

Pros

These yarns will really make your weavings stand out. Not much is needed to add a unique twist to your work. They are super fun and super unique to handspinning.

Cons

Although you can, I wouldn’t recommend knitting with as with this style of spin the coils can move around the core yarn.

The Jumbo Spiral Ply

Another texture rich art yarn. Similar to a coil but more suitable for knitting as the spirals are anchored around the core. (The jumbo spiral ply is the blue textured row at the top of my shoulder.)

Suggested needle size

15-20mm

These work well when added alongside other yarns for a pop of texture. When knitted they create a very dense and bulky fabric. If knitting a large garment solely with these yarns, opt for 20mm to keep the fabric as light and ‘drapey’ as possible.

What can I make with these?

These are just a few ideas, let your imagination run wild

– Any creative knitting project.
– Add a unique twist to your weavings
– Fringes or tassels
– Crochet with your fingers

Pros

These yarns will really make your project stand out. Not much is needed to add a unique twist to your work. A couple rows here and there will really transform your work. They are super fun and squishy.

The 2-ply Aran Art Yarn

A finer yarn that doesn’t compromise on texture. Spun straight from art batts this yarn is lumpy and bumpy and all the more glorious for it. Suitable for crocheting for all you crochet lovers. I can also spin in DK and Bulky weights.

Suggested needle size

5-6mm

These yarns aren’t consistent in nature but thats what gives them their charm. You can substitute as a yarn in any aran weight knitting patterns.
I can spin with high or low twist depending on what it is you want to knit. For larger items a woollen style (lighter) spin is best. For more hardwearing smaller items high twist will produce a more durable yarn.

What can I make with these?

– Knit warm hats, jumpers, mittens.
– Good for projects where a chunky yarn is too much, like babies knits.
– Weft for weaving (if spun with high twist)
– All things crochet!

Pros

The texture in these yarns is unreal. More than just a tweed they will give any project a unique twist. They are nice and streamlined which makes them easy for knitting and crochet.

The Traditional DK 2-Ply

Spinning straight from my hand-dyed braids makes this yarn stronger than its ‘art yarn’ sister. Perfect for those who prefer a more traditional aesthetic. Can also spin in Aran and Bulky weights.

Suggested needle size

4-5mm

You can substitute as a yarn in any DK knitting/crochet patterns. Note: These yarns are generally a little denser/heavier than commercially spun yarns. Knit with slightly larger needles than a commercial DK to compensate for this if you wish.

What can I make with these?

– Knit warm hats, jumpers, mittens, socks.
– Good for projects where a chunky yarn is too much, like babies knits.
– Warp or weft for weaving projects
– All things crochet!

Pros

These yarns are a dream to knit. Spun from one breed as opposed to my blended art yarns, they are completely streamlined.
